20 Jun Leading medico-legal company recommends apprenticeship partnership with tpm
SK Medical Practice is a leading high quality, independent medico-legal reporting organisation. They have a long-term apprenticeship partnership with tpm which allows them to successfully recruit and develop specialist administration staff in ways that suit their organisation.
As an SME in an incredibly competitive market SK Medical Practice need their staff to consistently deliver results. As part of Government reforms, the company must be registered with the online medical reporting system, Medco which insists on high standards. Since registration became obligatory, all medical reporting organisations have been audited and placed in a two tier system. Many found themselves at tier 2 whilst others have not been able to keep up with the standards and have disbanded.
SK Medical Practice however, have bucked the trend and worked tirelessly to regain status back into tier 1. This achievement was largely possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff. Consequently, employing the right staff, and investing in their development is of paramount importance to the organisation.
SK Medical Practice is proud to hire local people. But it can be difficult to recruit people with the relevant experience who can come in and do these specialist jobs straight away. That’s one of the reasons why SK Medical Practice started on their apprenticeship journey with tpm.
SK Medical Practice’s manager Kim Buoey explains:
“We are in a very niche industry so it is difficult to get ready-made employees. It is much easier to use home-grown talent. Discipline and a great team ethic can mould an apprentice into an effective cog.”
The journey with tpm started in 2011 when SK Medical Practice took on two apprentices for a year. Since then 16 more apprentices have been employed. Indeed 7 former apprentices still work for the company today and they have all progressed from a level 2 apprenticeship in business administration to a level 3. And the company will continue investing in their progress by enrolling them on tpm’s recently-introduced team leading apprenticeships.
Tracy Galvin, sales manager at tpm explains how much they value their partnership with SK Medical Practice:
“For us, having an apprenticeship partnership with employers who demonstrate a strong commitment to investing in staff and their progression is a real privilege. We don’t have to spend time explaining the benefits of apprenticeships because they already appreciate this: it’s evident in their company practices.
“We know SK Medical Practice want to see their employees’ progress and engage in lifelong learning. They believe staff gaining qualifications gives them the status they deserve. As Kim says – if you don’t invest in your employees then your company is dead!”
Understanding business needs
SK Medical Practice have used tpm for apprenticeship services from the start. They find that tpm staff completely understand the needs of their business. In addition, they are both flexible and supportive of all the apprentices and the staff at SK Medical Practice. The theory side of the apprenticeships is just as important as the practical element, and SK Medical Practice see the inherent value of the time apprentices spend with tpm tutors or attending teaching sessions at tpm for the development of professional skills and behaviour. Kim Buoey recommends partnering with tpm for apprenticeships:
“tpm are brilliant to work with and they’re really helpful. For instance, potential issues are dealt with quickly and they tailor their services around our needs. It is great that apprentices gain professional industry-recognised skills whilst working. Staying on at 6th form or going to university isn’t for everyone but there is no single better route. Apprenticeships are to be valued. They offer school leavers a real career pathway and employers like us a fantastic staff development tool.”
